According to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, approximately 8 million people suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the United States and that number is expected to rise as more veterans come home from conflicts overseas. Many of the afflicted individuals have taken a variety of prescription drugs to deal with the effects of PTSD with only very limited success. Each day is a struggle for sufferers and many are turning to cannabis to treat the disorder.
Since 2013, researchers at New York University’s Langone Medical Center have been conducting studies to answer the question, “Can cannabis treat PTSD?” The research has spurred the development of cannabis-related medications geared specifically for PTSD treatment. Researchers at Colorado’s Medical Marijuana Scientific Advisory Council are also working to study cannabis effectiveness for PTSD sufferers.
Arizona psychiatrist Sue Sisley is dedicated to proving that marijuana brings much-needed relief to PTSD sufferers. Some of her patients report that they experience their first good night’s sleep after partaking of marijuana for the first time, according to Newsweek. Others report significant improvement after using cannabis only three or four times.
Groups such as Weed 4 Warriors and Grow 4 Vet believe strongly in the beneficial effects of cannabis in the treatment of PTSD. They work tirelessly to support and educate vets about the positive effects of marijuana on the disorder.

The battle for medicinal recognition still continues in states such as Illinois and Colorado. Even with states accepting the use of medicinal cannabis to treat PTSD, veterans still face a battle because marijuana remains illegal at the federal level.
