More and more people are consuming cannabis. Now even athletes are starting to use marijuana. Elite triathlete Clifford Drusinsky is one of a few major athletes who advocate using marijuana as a performance- enhancer.
For some time marijuana users and athletes have been categorized separately. However as the trend towards legalization and social support increases, false negative stigmas of marijuana users are being alleviated. Too often people who consume cannabis are though of as being lazy and unmotivated.
When it comes to exercise Drusinsky is no amateur. In 2013 alone the 39 year-old took the podium in nine major triathlons, one of which he came home with a gold. According to Men’s Journal, marijuana energy bars with 20 milligrams of THC serve as a performance enhancer for Drusinsky’s training.
Eaten prior to training, the marijuana edible can be helpful in maintaining focus throughout the workout.
“Marijuana relaxes me and allows me to go into a controlled, meditational place,” says Drusinsky. “When I get high, I train smarter and focus on form.”
He has seen such positive results that he now operates his own personal gym which offers a marijuana-infused fitness program. One client remarked the fitness program has enabled him to work out longer than ever before.
Currently there is a lack of research on marijuana’s affect athletic performance. Many report that marijuana has many benefits including relieving pain and nausea, both of which can be the side effects of a gruesome work out. When marijuana is ingested, cannabinoids in our brain bind with natural cannabinoid receptors which help control mood, hunger, and pain threshold. Scientists believe these same receptors receptors play a role in helping achieve the commonly known “runner’s high.”This may be why marijuana could help give someone 110% during a workout.
It doesn’t look like the athletic advantages to ingesting marijuana end here. Studies with mice showed that low amounts of THC heaped improve motor skills. This may be because of one of the chemicals released in the bring when THC enters the bloodstream. This chemical known as pregnenolone helps initiate the release of naturally produced steroids in our body. This is commonly used as in ingredient in energy bars for helping increase energy and reduce fatigue.
However like most things in life, marijuana can come with downsides as well. Cannabis is known to increase your heart rate which isn’t ideal for athletes. Studies have also shown that cannabis can slow reaction time and may impact your ability to make decisions. It is extremely important to keep in mind marijuana is not for everyone and will affect different people in different ways.
So if you’re considering adding some mota to your motivation, remember, it is important to always use moderately and train safely.
Remember, it is important to first learn how marijuana affects you and what dose is right for you before trying marijuana as a potential performance enhancer. If used responsibly however, marijuana may serve as an excellent enhancement for your next workout.
