Millions of Americans suffer from chronic back pain.
For many of them, treatment options have traditionally been limited to either highly addictive prescription opiates such as Oxycodone, or a far less effective class of drugs known as NSAIDS, or (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). Used alone or in combination, these drugs carry with them potentially catastrophic side effects, and have widely varying success rates for patients dealing with intense pain.
Fortunately, new research has validated what many marijuana users have known for decades — marijuana can provide safe, effective, and controllable levels of pain relief with none of side-effects of opiates or steroid-based treatments. For the vast majority of individuals with back pain, the root cause of the pain is not a physical injury, such as a torn muscle, but an injury to the nerves in the back or spinal area.
Multiple studies have shown that two key cannabinoids in marijuana, THC and CBD, can provide almost instant relief for back pain. Patients taking part in the studies have reported significant decreases in pain level when using as little as three puffs of marijuana a day. Similar success rates have been reported in studies involving marijuana pills or vaped cannabinoids. Many patients in the trials, for whom traditional pain-relief methods had largely failed, reported better, increased sleep, decreased anxiety, and an overall feeling of improved well-being and quality of life.
Equality important, researchers have found that using marijuana for back and other neuropathic, or nerve pain, can lead to a decreased dependence on the use of opiates and a corresponding decrease in the potential for abuse or addiction.
For chronic back pain sufferers, medical marijuana offers new hope for a pain-free future.
