Does Weed Treat Glaucoma?

Weed and glaucoma go hand and hand: so what is it and does smoking marijuana actually help?

It’s hard to read anything about the potential medical uses of marijuana without reading about glaucoma, described generally as an eye condition in which the optic nerve becomes damaged over time, often as a result of intraocular pressure (IOP) that is higher than normal.

Since glaucoma can lead to blindness, glaucoma patients have a special interest in scientific literature evaluating marijuana as a treatment, especially now that it is becoming easier to obtain medical (or non-medical) marijuana. So the real question is: can cannabis effectively treat glaucoma?

For the moment, the answer to that question has to be a qualified “no.” So what do we know? It IS established that grass does lower IOP, but the problem is that to effectively treat glaucoma, you have to achieve and maintain a lower IOP. Grass lowers it, but only for three or four hours. In other words, a glaucoma patient who was only using grass to lower IOP would have to smoke (or ingest) marijuana every three or four hours around the clock to achieve a reduction in IOP.

While weed provides temporary relief, there are prescription eye drops and other more conventional medical methods that, if used correctly, achieve a longer-term reduction in IOP. While some people prefer marijuana as a more organic method of treatment, the majority of people prefer to use more typical therapies.

Although marijuana can lower the eye pressure, recommending this drug for the treatment of glaucoma at the present time does not make sense given its side effects and short duration of action, coupled with a lack of evidence that its use alters the course of glaucoma.  Whatever method you prefer, make sure you’re talking to your doctor about the proper treatment for your glaucoma.
