Marijuana Tourism: A Budding Industry

Although weed is not widely boasted about by tourism boards in the states where it has been legalized for recreational use, marijuana is a thriving industry. It is becoming a common motivator for visitors to plan vacations within the state’s borders.

Currently, four states and the District of Columbia have legalized marijuana for recreational use — Washington, Oregon, Alaska, and Colorado.  Would-be vacation planners can visit the Comprehensive Guide to the World of Marijuana to plan their cannabis-focused vacation itinerary.  On the pot travel site, vacation planners learn about marijuana tours, cannabis festivals, pot-friendly places to stay and where to buy recreational marijuana.

In Denver, there are several tour operators that feature 420 tours of local recreational dispensaries. Tourists may also want to take a tour of Medicine Man, the largest commercial marijuana grow facility in the United States.

The Weed Bus operates throughout downtown Seattle, Washington and whisks cannabis connoisseurs to local hemp and cannabis events. Seattle Green Adventures also operates in Seattle and takes tourists on a guided tour of downtown Seattle to help educate them on the state’s green movement.

In Oregon, visitors can attend festivals such as the High Holiday Bash hosted by the NW Cannabis Classic. The event features four segments — growers, entrepreneurs, leaders, and consumers. It is laid out like a cannabis-themed village. Numerous vendors are present for event-goers to sample their products. The High Holiday Bash is set to occur in December.

Also in Oregon, the Sungrown Cannabis Festival is planned in December to celebrate the state’s legalization of recreational marijuana. The Portland, Oregon event will feature local growers, producers, artists, chefs, live music, vendors and community members.
