The Disconnect on Dope

Support for marijuana legalization is rapidly outpacing opposition. Marijuana is already legally available in 23 states and the District of Columbia for medical purposes. Four states have voted to allow recreational adult use marijuana as well.

Every day, more and more people are becoming cannabis consumers.  In 1972, about a year after President Richard Nixon declared drugs “public enemy Number One,” 65% said the use of marijuana was a very serious problem for the United States. Now, that statistic is down to just 19%. Most Americans compare marijuana to alcohol rather than to hard drugs.

When asked, most Americans will put marijuana in the same category as alcohol and tobacco, yet, at a federal level, it is still illegal. All of this got us wondering, where does the disconnect on dope come from?

According to a Pew Research study, almost 19 million Americans consumed marijuana in the previous month.  In that same study, 63% of respondents said that if marijuana became as widely available as alcohol, the believe alcohol would be more harmful to society than marijuana.   According to the CDC, they’re right.  In a single year, alcohol and tobacco are directly responsible for more deaths than marijuana has ever been. That’s because no one has ever died as a direct result of marijuana.
